Keynote Speaker

Jennifer Jewell

We are delighted to welcome Jennifer Jewell to our community and invite you to come hear her presentations at this year’s EXPO at 10AM or 1PM. She is an award-winning author and host of “Cultivating Place”, a nationally syndicated public radio program as well as President/CEO of the Cultivating Place Foundation. She writes, “I believe gardens and gardeners are powerful, intersectional spaces and agents of betterment in our world.”
Ms. Jewell’s greatest passion is elevating the way we think and talk about gardening, the empowerment of gardeners, and the possibility inherent in the intersection between places, environments, cultures, individuals, and the gardens that bring them together beautifully – for the better of all the lives on this generous planet.

Two of her books will be featured at the EXPO: The Earth in Her Hands, 75 Extraordinary Women Working in the World of Plants and What We Sow: On the Personal, Ecological, and Cultural Significance of Seeds. Both will be available for purchase and Ms. Jewell will be on hand to sign purchased books following her talks.

What We Sow: On the Personal, Ecological, and Cultural Significance of Seeds... introduces us to the history, biology and dispersal of seeds. Jewell states it is a miracle we take for granted that plants come back to life every year and has much to teach us about their significance.

October is "high seed season,” and we are celebrating that at the EXPO.

The Earth in Her Hands... profiles women who describe the landscape they live in and to consider their own “plant journey,” from inspiration to learning to action. The book has beautiful photographs and these profiles are great to browse and “dip into,” for inspiration as we cultivate our own gardens and landscapes.

Ms. Jewell has worked as an editor, garden writer and created a national award-winning weekly public radio program and now podcasts. The interview-based program is Cultivating Place: Conversations on Natural History and the Human Impulse to Garden. Link to her info-rich website and her programs: https://www.cultivatingplace.org/

In 2023, Jewell was honored with the American Horticultural Society’s Great American Gardener B.Y. Morrison award for outstanding horticultural communication. Jennifer Jewell lives and cultivates her place in interior Northern California in the company of her partner, plantsman, John Whittlesey.
